The Emery High Spartan football team prepared for the opener of the 2011 football season by playing the annual Black and Gold game last Friday night. While this game in most years is a defensive slugfest, this year’s game was an offensive juggernaut. The white-shirted team won 46-42 over the black-shirted team.
Emery opens the 2011 season at home this Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Richfield Wildcats. Both Emery and Richfield, along with the Manti Templars, dropped from the 3-A classification in Utah High School sports to 2-A. Emery and Richfield were in the same region last year. Richfield defeated Emery last season in Richfield and the Spartans are looking to avenge that loss.
In the game, freshmen and sophomores on the team played the first and third quarters while varsity players, mainly juniors and seniors, played the second and fourth quarters.
The Emery coaching staff believes that this season’s team, although inexperienced on the varsity level, will be successful because of the athleticism of many of the players.
