PRICE – Our wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Barbara Murriel Stone Vande Sluis, returned to her Father in Heaven Friday, Aug. 19, 2011 at the age of 59, after a long illness.
Barbara was born Jan. 6, 1952, in Phoenix, Ariz., to Reed Marshall Stone and Marjorie Murrel West. The family moved to Mesa, Ariz., when Barbara was 4-years- old.
Barbara grew up in Mesa and graduated from Mesa High School in 1970. She then attended the University of Arizona in Tucson and later received her Associates Degree from the College of Eastern Utah. She met her best friend and the love of her life Bill Vande Sluis in Tucson.
She married Willem (Bill) Vande Sluis on Sept. 24, 1976 in the Mesa Arizona Temple. The couple lived in Tucson, Ariz., before moving to Salt Lake City in 1983. The family then moved to Richfield area in 1984. They made their home in Glenwood for many years before transferring to Price in 2001.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints she served in a variety of organizations. She was a visiting teacher, served in the Primary, Relief Society, Scouting, the Sunday school, as a Meetinghouse librarian, Manti Temple worker, and Family History consultant. Her passion was doing, teaching, and participating in genealogy.
Barbara loved her family, especially being a Grandma.
She is survived by her husband, Bill, Price; children, Timothy (Whitney) Alamo, Nevada; Miriam (Donny) Riding, Price; and Michael (Samantha), Taylorsville; grandchildren; Meladie, Peter, Ryan, Dorian, and Andrew Vande Sluis, Alamo, Nevada; Kristin Olivia Riding, Price; siblings, Robert (Nancy) Stone, Ravenna, Ohio; Thomas (Robin) McEntire and niece, Althea (Jason) Thomas and great nephew, Andrew Thomas, Mesa, Ariz; sister, Tobi McEntire, Phoenix, Ariz; cousins, Russell Hooten and Harold Hooten, Phoenix, Ariz; sisters-in-law, Catharine (Rondell) Stone, Gloria Johnson, Ravenna, Ohio; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father Reed Marshall Stone and mother, Marjorie West McEntire, and her brothers, Rondell Stone, Richard Marshall Stone, and Reed Stone, Jr.; aunts and uncles, grandparents and brother-in-law Ralph Johnson.
Funeral service, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, 11 a.m., Price Fifth LDS Ward (545 E. 400 N., Price). Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services. Interment Cliffview Cemetery, Price. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society .
