Vandalism was a hot topic at the Huntington City Council August meeting. Two parks have felt the effects of wanton acts of vandalism this past month. At the Huntington City Park, youth built a fire on top of a picnic table while at the Memorial Park by the cemetery, people went and broke all the lights at the park.
The youth at the city park were stopped by a local resident who called the sheriff’s office and then held the kids until deputies arrived. The city sent the resident a thank you card to the resident for their assistance.
The council also voted to hire a part-time employee that will work primarily at the dumpster site.For the past month, Huntington conducted a survey with close to 130 residents responding to that survey. Eighty six percent of those residents were in favor of raising the city utility bill by up to $2 to cover the cost of that employee.
The dumpster site has been a great asset for the city’s residents when they want to do a good clean up. It has been a good asset for the city because it has taken much junk, trash, garbage out of the city and made it easier for residents to keep their property clean.
In other business, Councilman Travis Larsen reported that the reservoirs are basically still full and that the city will not have any water issues this season. The city is looking at extending the length of time that water stays in the secondary lines to coincide with the burn season. Larsen also reported that the new fire station project is started.
