This season, Emery is playing some of the best volleyball the school has played in years but it may not do them a lot of good since they once again are stuck in a region with four great volleyball schools. Richfield and San Juan have been stuck at first and second in 2-A all season and Grand and South Sevier are good volleyball schools.
Emery opened the region season in mid September against Grand High in Castle Dale and lost the match in three straight games 18-25, 19-25 and 16-25. Emery then traveled to Blanding and lost again in three straight games to San Juan by the scores of 10-25, 21-25 and 12-25. Emery then traveled to Richfield to play the Wildcats and once again lost in three straight games. The scores were 21-25, 26-28 and 23-25.
The games against Richfield were all close with Emery losing at the end. Emery led game one at 21-20 until Richfield scored the final five points to grab the win. Emery led game two by that same 21-20 score, allowed Richfield to score four straight points, and then battled to the end. Emery led game three 21-18 and once again saw the lead vanish and lost a close one.
South Sevier then came to town and Emery finally broke through with a win as they defeated the Rams in four games. Emery won the opening game 25-23 and then lost game two by the same score. Emery won game three 25-21 and then won the best of five match by winning game four 25-21.
Games one and two saw Jessica Guymon serve particularly well as she served four straight points in each game when Emery needed a lift. Kaitlyn Thomson did the same thing in game three as she served Emery from being down at 7-6 to the Spartans being ahead at 14-7 as Emery scored eight straight points. Thomson also served the final points of the game as Emery scored four straight points to get the win.
Emery will play a non region game this week against Manti and then will return to region play the following week on Oct. 11 when they travel to Moab to face Grand for the second time.
