United Way day of caring in Green River

Celebrating 10 years of service the Green River Community Center participated in a Day of Caring with the United Way, Green River High School, City of Green River, PACT Board members, and Staff. This was in conjunction with 911 day of service.
Work started on Broadway cleaning weeds, goat heads, and picking up trash. Many truckloads were hauled off. The youth painted at the playground. This was the location of the old Community Center that was torn down in 2009. This 100 year old Community Center building was donated by the Baptists to the Center, after it was condemned Emery County donated the old Senior Citizen Center to the city of Green River and they gave it to the Community Center.
At noon a luau celebration was held at the city park. Kalua pork, rice, salads, and lots of Dunham melons were served. Speakers were Senator David Hinkins, Superintendant Kirk Sitterud, Principal Nolan Johnson, regional director for the Boys and Girls Club, Clifford Hackney, Commission on Volunteers, April Durrant, VOA Volunteer Coordinator Teresa Zamudio, PACT Board Chair Blaine Evans. They each talked of the importance of giving service. The UVU Polynesian Cultural Center performed native dances and instructed the audience in a few moves. Everyone enjoyed the food and the entertainment.
This year is celebrating a decade of serving Green River for the Community Center. In 2001 a few citizens formed the center to bring much needed services to a rural isolated community. They have served more than 58,000 meals to the seniors and youth of Green River. They have a Boys and Girls Club, food pantry, affordable housing, and business resource center, plus many more services available to the community. Their Non-profit PACT (Positive action community team) was formed to provide funding to support the center and other activities. The Green River Community Center has brought many jobs and economic help to this town and we want to wish them best of luck in the next decade.
