The Lady Pirates played host to Navajo Mountain and Monument Valley this past week in two very important region matches. If the Pirates could pull off both victories it would put them solid second place in region with only two region matches remaining. The first match was early on Saturday with Navajo Mountain.
The Lady Pirates got off to a slow start, but settled down soon and dominated to win the match in three sets. All the sets were nearly identical with scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-16. Megan Hatt led the Pirates with 13 kills, nine assists and four service aces. Michaela Hughes tallied 11 kills and three service aces. Jamie Johnson also had eight kills and five service aces. This was a complete team effort with all players greatly contributing to the win. Dallice Johnson with 18 assists. Sydney Thayn recorded two kills and two service aces, while Feleisha Antillon served up three aces.
This was only the first match of two on this day and the Pirates knew that the match with Monument Valley would be much tougher. The Pirates had beaten them earlier in the season in three sets, but all were very close. When the match began, it was evident that the MV Cougars had come to play as they jumped out to an early lead and held it. Quickly it seemed the score was 12-18 MV on top. As Megan Hatt took her position in the service area, the Pirates came to life. With great sets from Dallice Johnson and kills by Michaela Hughes and Jaime Johnson, coupled with hustle defense, Hatt soon served the score to 19-18 Pirates.
The remainder of the match was a dog fight but the Pirates prevailed in a great come back emotional win, 27-25. Green River dominated the second set 25-12 and held on in the third to win 26-24.
Megan Hatt again led the team with 17 kills, eight assists and three aces. Jamie Johnson recorded 13 hard kills and Michaela Hughes powered down eight kills, two assists and two blocks. This match was also won on total team effort as Dallice Johnson put up 23 assists. The tremendous hustle defense of the entire team sealed the win.
These wins put the Pirates in solid second place in region with the next match on Oct. 11 at Duchesne.
