On Tuesday Nov. 1, a meeting was held in Ferron City Hall for the purpose of forming a Tea Party organization in Emery County. This group is not affiliated with any other Tea Party organization and is not a political third party. The name “Tea Party” is a reference to the Boston Tea Party.
Jerry Stotler of Ferron and Karl Jackman of Orangeville led the discussion. The first topics discussed were is there enough interest in Emery County to start a Tea Party? If a Tea Party is formed, what do we want to accomplish with this organization. Some in the group wanted to reduce government spending, opposed taxation in varying degrees, reduce the national debt and federal budget deficit, and adhere to an originalist interpretation of the United States Constitution. One wanted to stop sending money to foreign governments. Others wanted to take actions that would influence the political process at the state and local level.
Jackman listed on the board things the organization should have. Number one, honesty and integrity, trust and trustworthiness. Number two, individual freedom and responsibility. Number three, the rule of law by consent of the governed. Number four a belief in and reliance on a supreme being. Number five, to take action that will have a positive effect on the political process at the state and local level. Number six, we shall not be wackos. Number seven, the purpose of law is not to prevent crime, but to provide legal consequences for the crime.
There appeared to be enough interest among those in attendance that another Tea Party meeting will be held on Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. in Ferron City Hall.
