The Utah State 2-A volleyball championships were held last weekend at Utah Valley University and region 15 came away the winner. Region 15 champion Richfield defeated region 15 runner-up San Juan in the championship game for the state title.
Region 15 third place finisher Grand made it to the semifinals but finished fourth in the state after a loss to Enterprise. Region 15’s Emery High finished eighth in the tournament after barely sneaking into the 16-team affair on the final day of the season. The Lady Spartans, for the most part, played excellent volleyball at UVU, and finished the tournament by placing.
Emery opened the tournament against Enterprise, a region champion, and played some really good ball before losing 27-25, 25-12 and 26-24. Games one and three could have been won by the Spartans.
In the Spartans second match, Emery played great and soundly thumped North Sevier 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18. Emery jumped out early in each game and never let North Sevier have any hope of getting back into the match.
In Emery’s third match on Saturday morning, Emery defeated a good Millard team by the score of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21. Although the games were close, Emery seemed to be in control throughout the match.
Emery then lost their final game to Beaver. The game decided the sixth place and eight place finishers in the tournament. Emery opened the match with a solid 25-16 thumping of Beaver. At that point, the Spartans started helping the other team it seemed with net serves and missed kill shots and Emery lost the next three games by the score of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-19.
