On Nov. 18-19, the Lady Pirates traveled to Richfield to participate in the 1A preseason preview at the Sevier Valley Center. The Pirates were given the Panguitch Bobcats as their first opponent. The girls came out nervous but settled in and in the fourth quarter pulled away to win by a score of 36-26.
Jamie Johnson was the scoring leader with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Michaela Hughes scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Megan Hatt ended with six points, 12 boards, six assists and three steals. Sydney Thayn had four points and Feleisha Antillion ended with three rebounds and two assists.
Fans thought it was a great team effort to pull off the first win of the season.
Next the Pirates were to face the Bryce Valley Mustangs. The Mustangs were the second place team in the state last year and are considered to be one of the top teams for this year. The Pirates came out fast and led for the better part of three quarters. Foul trouble presented the Pirates with some challenges and the Mustangs took advantage in the fourth quarter to hand the Pirates their first loss, 35-42.
Michaela Hughes ended the game with 13 points and six boards. Megan Hatt scored 12 points, four rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Feleisha Antillion put up five points and Jamie Johnson had four points, six boards and three steals.
After the game Coach Greg Parsons thought the girls had started out very nervous but once they settled in they looked very good at times. Coach Parsons said, “This was a good measuring stick for us. We have a better idea where we are now and what we have the potential to become. I am very pleased with how hard the girls played.”
The Pirates are next scheduled to play the Grand Devils in Moab on Nov. 29. Green River will also travel to Orderville to play in the Valley Tournament on Dec. 2-3.
