During the years, the rivalry between Emery and Carbon high schools has been intense and fun for the fans and players of the two high schools with games that have usually gone right to the end before the outcome was finally decided. Not this year, this year in both girls and boys basketball the forgone conclusion was that Carbon would win the game before the first half was over.
Last week, Carbon led the Emery girls 18-4 at the end of the first quarter and 28-15 at the half with fans from both teams knowing the final outcome would go the Dinos way. Final score was Carbon 56 Emery 30.
In the boys game last week, the scores at the end of the first quarter and at the half were similar. Carbon led 18-5 after one period and 34-13 at the half. Carbon defeated Emery by a final score of 72-54. Emery used a big fourth quarter to narrow the gap by 10 when they outscored the Dinos in the final period 25-15.
In both games Emery turned the ball over numerous times, had trouble rebounding and had trouble getting the ball to go in the hoop. The Carbon boys won by getting contributions out of 11 different players with Derek Young leading the way with 12 points in the first three quarters of play. The Carbon girls won because Miranda Averett led the Lady Dinos with 24 points and was clearly the best player on the floor in this game.
Senior Dallon Cologie led the Emery boy’s team with 23 points with 17 of those points coming in the final period. Jordan Cox scored 10 points with Bailey Faimalo scoring eight points. Also scoring for the Spartans were Curtis Mason with six points, Dawson Jensen with four points, Logan Tuttle with two points and Brendon Jorgensen with one point.
Also scoring for Carbon were Jordan Blanc with 11 points, Taje Richardson and Tanner Gagnon with nine points each, Bryce Blackburn with eight points, Clay Finkbiner with seven points, Nick Haycock with six points, Dakota Cisneros and Dillon Manzanares with four points each and Seth Tryon and Daulton Nelson with one point each.
Scoring for the Emery girls team were Jeridi Price and Shaylee Stokes with eight points each, Kim Oldroyd with seven points, Kelsie Cox with five points and Blayr Jeffs with two points. Emery shot 14 percent from the field in this game, a percentage that will not win any games. They were zero for 10 from behind the three-point line and six for 33 inside the line.
The Lady Dinos went on 10-0 runs to start the first and third quarters which proved to be too much for Emery to overcome. Also scoring for Carbon were Rachel Scoggins with 10 points, Regan Powell with eight points, Lexi Gagon with five points, Kelcy Otani with four points, Jennee Martinez and Shaylie Jones with two points each and Shailee Croasmun with one point.
