The Emery High wrestling team had a busy week last week with the team opening region action against South Sevier and then participating in the 2-A Duals meet at the Sevier Center in Richfield.
Emery hosted South Sevier in Castle Dale and came away the winner 45-35 despite giving away 12 points as the team has no wrestlers in the two lightest weight classes. With nobody at 106 pounds or 113 pounds, it is tough for Emery to win.
Emery won eight matches while South Sevier won three matches plus the two forfeits. Only two matches ended up by a decision rather than a pin. At 160 pounds, Emery’s Tyson Stout was decisioned by a score of 17-2. At 126 pounds, Emery’s Ryan Cox won the match 15-9 in the only competitive match of the night. Cox led 3-2 after the first round and 8-7 after the second round. In round three, Cox got a takedown, a reversal and a near fall to grab the win.
The night started at 152 pounds with Dakota Curtis pinning his opponent at 1:10 of the first round. At 170 pounds, Chet Funk pinned his man with 35 seconds left in round two. At 182 pounds, Brett Sorensen pinned his man at 1:38 of round two.
Zach West of Emery got pinned at 195 pounds. Ky Jensen pinned his opponent at 1:00 of the first round. Brandon McCandless got pinned at 285 pounds in the second round.
At 120 pounds, Cezly Collard pinned his man with 53.8 seconds left in the first round. At 132 pounds, Paden Wells pinned his man with 48.3 seconds left in the first round. At 138 pounds, Taven Miller got pinned as the second round came to a close.
In the final action of the night, Emery’s Cole Guymon won his match at 145 pounds by pinning his man with 32 seconds left in the first round.
At Richfield, Emery defeated Kanab 46-28, San Juan 54-16, Gunnsion 48-30, North Summit 41-28 and Grand 48-34. Emery tied Richfield 42-42. Emery lost to North Sevier 70-9, Enterprise 45-30, South Summit 45-24 and Beaver 53-27. Emery gave up between 12 and 18 points in each of these matches due to forfeits.
Individually, Chet Funk had a great tournament as he went 10-0. Cezly Collard went 8-2 and Ryan Cox was 7-3. Every Emery wrestler won at least two matches during the two days. In the JV tournament, Ky Jensen went 8-0 and took first place.
