The Emery High Spartan boy’s basketball team entered the week with the opportunity to win two region 15 games and claim second place in the region outright. With two wins, Emery would finish all alone in second place behind region winner South Sevier. Unfortunately the Spartans split their games and finished the season tied with Richfield with 4-4 records.
Emery defeated Grand 68-45 on Wednesday night and then lost to San Juan on the road Saturday night at San Juan 70-62. Fortunately for the Spartans though was the fact that they won the coin flip and will face the Enterprise Wolves this Saturday night at Snow College with game time set for 8 p.m.
Against Grand, Emery dominated the Devils throughout the game and easily ran away with win. Emery led 16-8 after the first quarter and 30-14 at the half. Emery won the third quarter 21-13 to continue building their lead. After three periods the score was 51-27.
Senior Dallon Cologie led the way against Grand by scoring 16 points. Junior Dawson Jensen continued his offensive showing as of late by adding 15 points in limited play in the blowout game.
Also scoring in the game were Brenden Jorgensen and Jordan Cox with seven points each. Curtis Mason and Spencer Labrum each scored six points with Corbin Barnett scoring four points. Logan Tuttle scored three points and Bailey Faimalo and Dillon Wilstead each scored two points.
In a Saturday afternoon game, Emery battled hard to win a game and to keep control of their own destiny. San Juan was on fire from the field early in this game, as they couldn’t miss in the first period. The Broncos led after the first quarter 24-15. Emery kept shooting the ball decently in the second quarter and added better defense to go along with as the Spartans narrowed the gap by the half. At halftime, Emery trailed 35-30.
Emery scored the first four points of the third quarter to now trail by one point. San Juan responded by scoring the next six points to rebuild their lead. Dawson Jensen scored 18 points in the first three periods before having to sit midway through the third period after picking up his fourth foul. Both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter.
In the final period, Emery narrowed the score to 50-46 behind four more points from Jensen but Jensen fouled out with four minutes left to remove Emery’s main offensive threat.
Brenden Jorgensen, with three minutes left in the game, stole the ball and went down and scored a lay-up to narrow the Bronco lead to 54-52. Emery had opportunities to tie the game or even take the lead but it just wasn’t to be and San Juan held on to grab the win.
Emery made five more shots from the field in this game only to see the Broncos win this game from the free throw line. Emery made 27 field goals in the game while San Juan only made 22. San Juan was 19 for 29 at the free throw line while Emery was only four for 10. One could surmise that the officiating wasn’t exactly equal in the interpretation of the rules against each team.
Dawson Jensen led the team with 22 points while two other Spartans also scored in double figures. Cologie scored 12 points with Jorgensen scoring 11 points. Curtis Mason came close to double figures but finished the game with eight points. Logan Tuttle scored six points and Jordan Cox scored three points to close out the scoring for Emery.
Emery will face Enterprise this Saturday in the final game of the day. Games start at 9 a.m. with the Spartans playing in game eight. The winners of the Saturday games will continue play the following week at the Sevier Valley Center starting on Thursday. The loser of this Saturday’s games are through for the season.
