The Emery High Lady Spartan softball team made it all the way to the championship game of the St. George Warm-Up softball tournament last weekend before losing a game. Enterprise came out on top of Emery 10-2 to end the Spartan run of four straight victories.
Emery started the tournament with a 13-2 victory over Ogden. North Sevier was the next victim as the Spartan team prevailed 17-1. Kanab was also no match for Emery as the final score here was 15-0. Emery then outlasted American Leadership Academy 13-7 to advance to the championship game.
Emery pitchers Whitney Roper and Jeridi Price started on the mound and limited their opponents to a total 23 base hits in the five games. Ogden, North Sevier and Kanab had a total of three hits to really throw off the average. ALA had 11 base hits, 10 of which were singles.
Against Ogden, Emery scored 13 runs on 12 walks and four base hits. Bryton Hess hit a homerun in the bottom of the first inning and walked twice and scored three runs to lead the Emery effort. Jaiden Huntington had the only other extra base hit, a double in the third inning. Jo Jennings and Roper each had a single in the game.
Against North Sevier, Emery had 11 base hits and six walks in scoring the 17 runs. Hailey Cloward had a triple and Jennings, Price, Roper, Kate Thomson and Shandee Jewkes each hit doubles. Singles were had by Jennings, Thomson and Jewkes with Roper hitting two singles.
Against Kanab, Emery scored 15 runs but garnered only four base hits in the game. The Cowboy pitching staff gave up seven walks and the defense, or the lack of defense might be a better word, committed nine errors to aid the Emery offense. The four hits were by Thomson, Bennett and Huntington with Jaiden having two hits.
Jennings scored three times after two walks and two errors. Thomson also scored three times with a walk, a hit and an error getting her on base.
Against ALA Emery finally had what one would call a game although ALA had to score three runs in the final inning to get the score as close as it was.
Emery had 12 base hits in this game. Auminee Bennett hit a home run over the left field fence in the Spartan final at bat and Bennett also had a double in the first inning to score a pair of runs. Price and Huntington also doubled in the game.
Singles were hit by Jennings, Hess, Price, Huntington, Roper, Thomson, Jewkes and Hailee Beckstead as each Emery batter had at least one hit in the game.
Against Enterprise, Emery kept the game close until Enterprise’s final at bat. Enterprise was up 3-2 when they erupted for seven runs in that final inning. Emery had six base hits in the game with Whitney Roper hitting both a double and a homerun. Jennings, Huntington, Thomson and Jewkes each hit singles. No Emery batter walked in this game.
Emery pitching gave up nine base hits but five Spartan errors did in Emery. Enterprise had only two earned runs in the game, the same as Emery.
Emery’s preseason schedule continues this week with a Tuesday game at Juab and then Emery opens region play Friday with a home game against Richfield.
