On April 27 there will be an open house for the new Huntington City Fire Station from 3-6 p.m. Ribbon cutting will take place at 3 p.m. The residents of Huntington and anyone interested is invited to stop by and see the new facility. Mayor Hilary Gordon is excited that the construction period is coming to an end and the facility can now be used by emergency personnel to serve the residents.
Also talked about at the April Huntington City Council meeting was the upcoming Heritage Days. The city has scheduled another performer for July 4 in the afternoon under the pavilion. Hypnotist Mont Dutson will put on a show early Wednesday afternoon as soon as the previous act, the band No Limits, has removed its equipment from the stage.
Huntington City is considering removing the fireplace located in the city park and installing bar-b-que grills that would use charcoal in the park. Nobody with the city can actually remember anyone using the fireplace in the last 20 or so years. The item will be discussed again in the May meeting.
Huntington City zoning administrator Gary Arrington presented a parks master plan to the council. The city is looking at developing Green’s Grove, a 55-acre piece of ground the city owns located on Center Street at 400 East. Also in the plan are new grandstands for the rodeo grounds and a new concession/kitchen building for the city park that would include new restrooms.
The committee recommended to the city council, and the council agreed, to proceed with funding requests from various agencies and foundations to see if actual development can occur. The city welcomes ideas for the park as the master plan continues being developed. Currently being considered are ponds with a stream connecting, a disc golf course, RV campground, picnic areas, walking paths and other park activity sites.
The city approved four new business licenses. The Miner’s Table, a restaurant, JK’s Bonbons, a chocolate manufacturer, Wally’s tire and Wheel, a tire shop, and Fire Rock Industries, a lump coal business.
The city approved putting cameras at the city parks that would be set off by motions sensors located around the facility that would allow the city to catch vandalism as it occurs.
Construction is also underway in Huntington as 10.5 blocks of sidewalks and eight blocks of curb and gutter are going in. Most of the sidewalks this year are located on the east side of town since the west side saw most of the sidewalk installation last year.
