Early summer is a great time to disconnect from the video games, computers and phones and reconnect with the outdoors. The US Forest Service is inviting the public to enjoy National Get Outdoors Day on June 9 by hiking Huntington Canyon. There are nine easy, moderate, and difficult trails that can be reached from State Route 31 in the canyon. Folks can choose the trail and time that suits them. There’s no need to show up at a certain time and place – just come prepared to hike and have fun.
“We hope you will bring your friends and family and spend a day in the outdoors hiking, picnicking, taking photos, enjoying the scenery, watching for wildlife, or just relaxing,” said Allen Rowley, Supervisor of the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
SR-31, the Huntington and Eccles Canyons National Scenic Byway, can be reached from SR-89 in Fairview and SR-10 in Huntington.
The Forest Service is also hosting a June 9 volunteer project to help repair Corner Canyon and Second Water trails. Volunteers will join Forest Service employees as they work to clear and build trail features on these two high elevation trails.
Volunteers who don’t know the way to the Second Water Trailhead, should meet at 8 a.m., June 9 at the Forest Supervisors Office, 599 West Price River Drive, Price. Forest Service employees will lead you to the project site.
Those who know the way should meet at the Second Water Trailhead at 9 a.m. Come dressed to work, with gloves, boots, and a hat. The Forest Service will provide equipment. Bring plenty of water and a lunch. To volunteer call 435-636-2817 and speak to the volunteer coordinator.
Whether hiking or building trail, there are some safety rules to remember: Wear good shoes, socks, and a hat. Be prepared for the forecasted weather with appropriate gear. Bring enough water to last you the length of the hike. Carry snacks. Wear sunscreen and reapply often. You may need insect repellant. Choose a trail that fits your fitness level. Don’t overdo. Tell someone where you are going and when to expect your return.
