Elmo discusses Horse and Buggy Days

,p>Elmo Town met for their June meeting and Ethan Migliori a candidate for county commissioner spoke to the council. He listed his qualifications for commissioner. He said he has worked in small business. He was one of the founders of the BEAR program which is Business, Expansion and Retention. He said it is extremely hard to attract businesses to our area and we need to work to help the businesses we have now. In working with the BEAR program he has helped put $3.2 million in the pockets of local businesses and 50 new jobs have been generated this year. The BEAR program is a model statewide now for economic development. “A lot of businesses don’t know how to grow and we can help them,” said Migliori.
The council told him any help he can give in generating businesses for Elmo will be appreciated. Migliori said education is very important and many jobs these days are shifting from industry to technology. Skilled employees are needed. He thinks the local college needs to help out more with tech jobs and trade jobs, more specialized degrees are the wave of the future. Migliori would also like to help businesses that are home businesses get their names out there and be able to expand and hire people.
The upcoming Horse and Buggy Days was discussed and there will be a bike ride, showdeo, 5k run, firemen games, dinner, dance, parade. The event is scheduled for Aug. 9-11. One concern mentioned is the event will be the same weekend as the second week of the Castle Valley Pageant.
The Elmo youth council is in need of leaders to take over the program. The youth council is very active with Horse and Buggy Days and someone needs to step up and be a leader for the youth to continue their activities. Kids seventh grade and older are welcome to join the youth council. The money they earned last year selling concessions at Horse and Buggy days went to Sub for Santa.
Patsy Stoddard from the Relay For Life committee invited Elmo Town to have a team in the upcoming Relay for Life on July 13-14 at the Emery High track.
The council discussed sidewalks and how many they will be able to do with the money they have allotted. They will put the work out to bid. They have $200,000 to spend while still leaving reserve money in the road fund.
The council discussed the garbage contract. The amount charged to residents will stay the same for garbage at $7.55 per month.
The town is having problems with garbage blowing around from garbage cans tipping over during wind storms. Everyone should try to clean-up their own garbage. The maintenance man will work on the sprinklers at the ball park, there are dry spots from sprinklers not working properly. Some areas of the ball field need replanting to fill in bare areas.
Problems with garbage in the park was discussed and work will be done there. Work will also be done to improve the cemetery with trimming around the headstones and under benches. The weeds are growing well and work needs to be done around town to keep the weeds down. The help of the residents is asked to help make the town look good by helping with weeds and garbage.
There are some piles of dirt at the cemetery that the county said they would help remove. The council will make sure these piles of dirt are leveled.
Some repairs will need to be made at the pavilion before Horse and Buggy days including a leaky water fountain.
The council mentioned dogs are still a problem in Elmo and dogs need to be kept in yards and off the streets. People must be responsible for their animals. The town will borrow the county dog trap and any trapped dogs will be taken to the pound.
