The fall sports seasons for Emery County high schools is quickly coming to an end. While volleyball at Emery High and Green River High is still going strong and the Emery football team will be playing in the post-season after finishing the regular season this week, the other sports are almost finished.
Green River baseball
Last week, the Pirate baseball team split their final regular season doubleheader against Wendover to force the Pirates into a play-in game. Green River opened the Wendover games needing to win both to go outright to state. Green River defeated Wendover 8-2 in the opener but then the Pirates suffered a 12-8 loss. The loss forced the Pirates into a one-game play-in game against Pinnacle and Pinnacle defeated Green River 13-9 to end the Pirate season. Pinnacle then went onto the quarterfinals in Spanish Fork and they lost to West Ridge Academy 13-3 to end their season. Other winners at Spanish Fork were Panguitch over Tintic 11-1, Piute over St Joseph 11-1 and Tabiona over Wayne 2-1.
Emery Golf
The Emery golf season came to an end with a 10th place finish at the Rose Park golf course in Salt Lake City. Beaver High won their third straight title by an impressive margin as the Beavers had five finishers in the top 10. Beaver was followed by Rowland Hall, Grand, Manti, Millard, Wasatch and Richfield.
McKlane Allred finished the best of any Emery golfer this season with a seventh place in region play. The Spartans as a team finished fourth in region before advancing to the state tournament. Also representing the Spartans at Rose Park were Teigen Jewkes, Jordan Fuller, Mark DeBry, Zane Cologie and Kyler Farley. Allred and Cologie are juniors while Fuller is a freshman. The others are sophomores, which should make Emery have a good returning nucleus next season.
Emery Tennis
The Emery tennis team’s season came to a close with play at the 2-A state tournament held at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Rowland Hall took the state team title by grabbing four of the five titles up for grabs. Rowland Hall won first singles, second singles and third singles along with second doubles.
Manti won first doubles with a victory over the team from St Joseph and the team finished second behind Rowland Hall. Waterford, Richfield, San Juan, St. Joseph and Grand were the next teams.
Emery’s first doubles team of Lauren Clark and Savannah Woolsey opened the meet with a match against Manti, the eventual champion, and lost that match 6-1, 7-6(7-1). Emery’s second doubles team of Nicole McCandless and Amanda Burnside opened their meet by also facing the eventual champions. They lost to Rowland Hall 6-1, 6-2. Rowland Hall defeated San Juan in the championship match.
