On Nov. 21 a call came into the Emery County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center reporting a vehicle had left the road coming down Gentry. The accident was reported at 7:06 p.m. The accident took the life of Jordan Wallace Hatch, 46, of Huntington.
Hatch and friend Leon McElprang along with some of McElprang’s children and friends were working on Gentry Mountain, reseeding in some of the areas burned by the Seeley fire.
They left the mountain and were heading home at the time of the accident. The Hatch vehicle left first and the McElprang vehicle followed shortly after.
Lt. Gayle Jensen reported that McElprang spotted a couple of the dogs in the road and stopped his vehicle. The horse rack was near the road and McElprang knew something had happened. He instructed Austin Jeffs to call 911 and report the accident.
The Hatch vehicle had left the road and dropped 140 feet down into a ravine. Lt. Jensen said it appears the vehicle came close to the side of the road and Hatch overcorrected flipping the vehicle in the road and then it rolled down the embankment. Hatch was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Lt. Jensen said Hatch died on impact. The Emery County Search and Rescue rope team aided in the recovery efforts and Landon’s towing brought the vehicle out of the ravine. Two horses were with Hatch at the time of the accident and one horse died and one survived.
Jordan Hatch was a cattleman and farmer in Huntington. He was an instructor at CEU Eastern where he headed the Heavy Equipment department. He was currently the chapter president of the Emery County Farm Bureau. Hatch leaves behind his wife Joel who works at Zion’s bank and two children Holly and Elder Haden Hatch.
