Spartans drop games at Carbon/Beaver

Usually sports stories in this paper include all games in any given week but not this week. This week, due to Christmas, the deadline was pushed up by several days and so here we are just reporting on the games that were played by Emery High on Tuesday night. The rest will be in next week’s paper.
Both Emery High teams went on the road Tuesday night, the boy’s to Beaver and the girls to Carbon, and both went home with a loss. Beaver beat the Spartans 55-47 while Carbon defeated the Lady Spartans 53-49.
The Carbon-Emery game, while at times was poorly played, was never-the-less exciting because of the closeness of the game and the rivalry between the two schools. It didn’t hurt that the game went into overtime.
Ashlynn Allred led Emery with 19 points, most of them coming in the second half, but the Spartan team could not claim their second victory of the season from these Dinos. Shelby Cornforth led Carbon with 17 points while Shailee Croasmun added 14 in the victory. Both of these Carbon players fouled out of the game.
Carbon took the early lead of 11-7 in the first quarter and then extended the lead by one point in the second quarter to lead 20-15 at the half. Carbon extended the lead in the third quarter to 30-22 as Emery still struggled in scoring and struggled with rebounding.
Carbon out rebounded the Spartans by a margin of 28-20 but it seemed that too many of those Dino rebounds were ripped out of Emery hands, as the Spartans couldn’t hold onto the ball.
Ashlynn Allred also led the team with steals with six. Shelby Allred, a cousin to Ashlynn Allred, scored 10 points to be the only other Spartan in double figures. Jeridi Price scored 9 points and had 6 rebounds to lead the team and 3 steals in the game. Other players scoring were Bailey Rasmussen with 4 points, Kelcie Cox with 3 points, and Cassidy Labrum and Ashton Bell with 2 points each.
Emery had 13 turnovers in the game but only 3 assists, not a good ratio. Carbon had 11 turnovers in the game with 8 assists. One would hope that assists actually would number higher than turnovers. Carbon, due to turnovers and rebounding, took 46 shots in the game while the Spartans only took 31. Emery had a higher shooting percentage of 39 percent to 35 percent and the Spartans actually shot better at the line 20 for 26 while Carbon was 20 for 29.
The Emery boy’s team only scored a single point in the second quarter which ultimately helped lead to their demise in this game. Emery lost the first quarter 11-7 and the second quarter 9-1 to trail 20-8 at the half. Emery then won both quarters of the second half but it wasn’t enough to grab the win.
Only four Spartans scored in this game with junior guard Bailey Faimalo leading the team with 22 points. Faimalo shot 47 percent from the field in the game while the team as a whole shot 39 percent. Faimalo is the leading scorer for the season for Emery with a 16.1 scoring average.
Two other Spartans are averaging double figures for the season, Dawson Jensen is averaging 10.9 and Brendon Jorgensen is averaging 10.1. The team, as a whole, is shooting 42 percent from the field for the season. They are averaging 56 percent at the free throw line. Also scoring in this game was Jorgensen with 15 points, Jensen with 6 points and Spencer Labrum with 4 points.
Jensen led the team with 6 rebounds while Faimalo had 4 assists to lead the team in that category. Five players had a single steal in the game.
For the season, Labrum leads the team with 63 rebounds while Jensen is right behind with 61. Jensen leads the team with 7 blocked shots while Labrum has 3 to follow in second place. Faimalo leads the team with 23 steals while Curtis Mason is second with 12. Faimalo also leads the team with 35 assists with Jorgensen second with 17 assists.
