The Spartan men stayed home and hosted the Rams in the first region contest of the season. South Sevier won 73-60.
The South Sevier men have been ranked either number one or number two in 2-A basketball all season and are the two-time defending state champions and return three starters from last season’s team. Senior guard Race Parsons has been named one of the 10 best basketball players in the state this season.
Emery got off to a slow start in their game as the Rams scored the first seven points and led 17-8 after the first period. In the second quarter, Spartan McKlane Allred entered the game and hit two straight three-point shots that seemed to give Emery some fight and the Spartans went on to win the period 25-20 and trailed at the half only by four points, 37-33. The two teams battled through the third quarter and into the fourth quarter before South Sevier pulled away to grab the win. Parson finished with 26 points in the game but took at least that many shots in attaining those points.
Allred finished the game tied with Dawson Jensen as the leading scorer with 12 points each. Allred hit another pair of three’s in the second half as he made a significant contribution in the game. Jensen also had 11 rebounds.
Other Spartans scoring were Bailey Faimalo and Spencer Labrum with 10 points each, Dillon Wilstead with 9 points, Brendon Jorgensen with 3 points and Curtis Mason and Corbin Barnett with 2 points each. Faimalo had 7 assists in the game plus 6 rebounds. Barnett also had 6 rebounds while Labrum had 5 rebounds. The Emery men played another game last week as they hosted Dugway in a preseason contest. Emery led 39-9 at the half and coasted to 80-36 win over the 1-A school.
Faimalo finished the game with 18 points with most of those coming in the first half. Wilstead scored 14 points and Jensen scored 10 points. Allred and Labrum scored 8 points each while Barnett and Gavin McDermott each scored 5 points. Beau Roundy and Tyson Roper scored 4 points each while Jorgenson and David Dyer each scored 2 points. In this week’s action, the girls continue on the road while the boys will play a pair at home. The Lady Spartans travel to Richfield on Tuesday night to play the top ranked team and then travel to Grand on Saturday for a game scheduled to start at 5 p.m. The men’s team will host Richfield on Wednesday night and then will host Grand on Saturday night with game time set for 7 p.m.
