The Emery High baseball team was supposed to play three games last week but the Tuesday region game at South Sevier was postponed to later in the month due to the inclement weather that day. Emery did play Gunnison in a non-region game and lost 10-6 and then rebounded by defeating the San Juan Broncos at home on Friday by the score of 3-2.
In the region 15 game against San Juan, Emery scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning to lead early on. San Juan tied the score in the top of the fourth and the game stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth inning. In that inning, Drexler Tanner got a base hit and under speed-up rules was replaced as a runner by Slayde Childs. Childs would score on a passed ball as the Spartans regained the lead.
San Juan tied the score in the top of the seventh inning and the game went to extra innings as Emery could not respond. In the bottom of the eighth inning, lead-off batter Ridge Nielson walked, got to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tappen Draper and then scored on a base hit by Tyson Roper.
Dillon Wilstead started on the mound for Emery and held the Broncos at bay most of the game. Dillon pitched a complete game, gave up three base hits and struck out 13 batters. Emery only had five base hits in the game but made the most of them. Two Emery errors aided in the Bronco runs.
Against Gunnison, coach Steven Gordon said, “We had no intensity in that game, we had no desire to be there.” Emery out hit Gunnison 14-10 but left runners stranded at second base and third base all game long as the batters did not come through when needed.
Baylee Bolotas was the starting pitcher and took the loss. Four Emery batters had extra base hits in the game, all being doubles. Wilstead, Roper, Gavin McDermott and Marco Mota all had doubles.
Emery plays three games this week, Richfield at home on Tuesday, North Sevier home on Wednesday and at Grand on Friday.
