Machines available to farmers for use

By By

When gas prices are high and water scarce, farmers need to implement more efficient practices to make their operations profitable. Traditional tillage practices require traveling over the same ground as many as eight times, making fuel bills costly. By implementing no-till practices fuel bills can be reduced dramatically and still produce the same results. No-till practices are not a new idea and have actually become quite popular across the country by producers who are willing to think outside of the box. No-till practices reduce the amount of soil lost each year when starting a new crop.
The San Rafael Conservation District owns two full size no-till drills, and a smaller overseeder that are available to rent for producers in Carbon and Emery counties. The no-till drills are designed to plant seed in unprepared ground even over the top of crop residues. The drills are easy to use and can plant many seed types including cover crops. The drills require a 75 horsepower tractor or larger to operate. The overseeder serves the same purpose as the no-till drills, just in smaller applications. For more information and scheduling contact the Conservation District at (435) 381-2300 ext. 101. The Land Pride Overseeder can implement no-till practices in small locations and help to reseed in unproductive spots. The San Rafael Conservation District also offers the rental of a Lightfoot Seed Cleaner that will remove weed seeds and chaff from the desired seed, allowing producers to utilize less expensive seed and still prevent the planting of undesired weed populations. Many producers have been hesitant to raise their own seed crops because of the risk of replanting weeds. Using the seed cleaner can eliminate that worry and allow producers to reduce their seed bill as well. The seed cleaner is easy to use and can save on herbicide costs in the future. The seed cleaner is adaptable to be able to use on various seed types. The seed cleaner can increase producer efficiency and reduce costs for producers.
