Green River Golf Results: Both meets held at Rose Park Golf Course in Salt Lake City
Boys Golf: At the beginning of the year Coach Maughan told the boys that he thought that they could finish the season in the top three of state.
The boys reached his expectations and took second place at the State Championship meet. The boys team was tied for third at the end of the first day of competition with Rich High School with a team score of 334 trailing St. Joseph’s by two strokes and first place Layton Christian.
They had a strong second day, bringing in a score of 329 to take second place in the State Meet. Layton Christian won with a score of 622, and Green River finished with a score of 663. Zackary Shaffer finished tied for 5th place overall individually with a two day score of 156. Chance Pfander finished in 10th place overall with a two day score of 167. Landen Fluckey and TJ Hughes tied for 11th place overall with two day scores of 170. Nick Corrigan finished 25th overall with a two day score of 195.
Nathan Cox finished 45th overall with a two day score of 215. Zackary and Chance were both named to the All-State First team. This is the first time since Green River has played golf that they have brought home a State trophy.
Girls Golf: Two girls played at the State Championships as individuals, Mikayla Shaffer and Kira Engleman. Mikayla finished in 8th place overall with a stroke score of 105, and a Stableford score of 59. Kira tied for 11th with a stroke score of 111, and a Stableford score of 53. As a result of their scores, Mikayla was named to First Team All-State, and Kira was named Second Team All-State.
With solid play from each of the top four golfers, the Green River Pirate boy’s golf team finished second at the recent Utah State 1-A golf tournament at the Rose Park Golf Course in Salt Lake City.
Green River shot a team score of 663 to finish behind Layton Christian and just ahead of Rich High and St. Joseph.
Zack Shaffer shot a 77-79 for a total score of 156 and finished as the fifth place golfer at the state meet. Chance Pfander shot an 85-82 to finish with a score of 167 and finished tenth. Landen Fluckey with an 83-87 and TJ Hughes with an 89-81 both finished with a 170 score and tied for eleventh.
Jared Kenney of St. Joseph shot a 71-75 for a 146 to finish with the best score. Jaece Stokes of Layton Christian shot a 149 to finish second and Austin Geddings of Layton Christian shot a 153 to finish third.
Green River was the only top four school that shot a better score on day two than on day one. Green River took five shots off their score to jump from tied for third to second. St. Joseph dropped to fourth from second place.
