Green River City held their monthly city meeting on June 11. The council approved the minutes of the previous meetings. The council discussed the subordinate notes for the Crown Housing Project. The city purchased a note for the project for $5,000. Since the purchase the note has accrued interest. Conae Black initiated a telephone conference call with the Utah Housing Authority about the project. The UHA is looking at the payoff figures for the units. There is a formula used for the process to calculate the sell price. The target date for this is the end of June. The current tenants will be offered the opportunity to buy the units first. They would be likely to improve the dwellings and make repairs as necessary. After the units are sold Green River City will get the interest that has accumulated.
Mayor Pat Brady requested the city look into increasing the resort tax from 1 percent to 2 percent Most business owners said the increase would not harm business. Brady will look into what needs to take place to increase the resort tax.
As part of a statewide project Gov. Gary Herbert has sent a letter to the cities to go to their businesses and see what city laws make it difficult to do business. It was suggested to put a notice on the monthly water bill about this, but the water bill is too small to include information. A survey letter will be sent to all of the businesses in Green River and they will be contacted personally to get their input. Councilman Gary Riches said, some of the city ordinances are outdated and some just don’t make sense. He has been looking over the ordinances to see which ones can be removed or revised. This would make it easier for the business owners as well as the residents of Green River. He will bring his findings to a future city council meeting for discussion.
Brady said they are trying to shut down the jet fuel tanks at the airport. In order to do this all of the fuel must be removed from the tanks. Brady contacted the Moab Airport and they didn’t want the fuel. He is offering it to anyone for free if they would like to come and get it. The plan is to shut them down temporarily, but eventually remove them. The old airport office has been given to the Cheer Program. They will repair the building and make improvements.
Jeff Johnson from the Utah Community Emergency Response Team presented a slide show to the council. He stressed the importance of citizens being prepared for a disaster. Johnson said the goal is to “Teach, educate and train citizens.” CERT prepares the community to respond to disasters and help their neighbors. Several citizens in Green River are already CERT trained. The next CERT training is available in August.
The city council opened the 2012/2013 budget for the purpose of increasing or decreasing the budget amounts. They also discussed the 2014 tentative budget.
