The Emery High golf team played their second match of the season, this time at Palisades State Park south of Manti. Palisades will host the 2-A state tournament in October so it is always a good thing to become familiar with a course early. After finishing second out of five teams a week ago at Spanish Oaks, the team fell to a third place finish this time around. Team scores were Grand 338, South Sevier 366, Emery 376, North Sevier 411 and San Juan 516. Last week Emery trailed Grand by 20 strokes, this week by 38. McKlane Allred continued being the team leader as he shot an 84 and tied for third place. Allred has been the team’s ace for several years.
Jordan Fuller shot an 89 as Fuller gives Emery a good one, two punch. Teigan Jewkes shot a 97 and Zayne Cologie shot a 106 to be the final qualifier for the Emery team. Mark DeBry and Reece Behling were the other Emery golfers this week. In tournament play, each school plays six golfers and takes the four best scores to arrive at the team score.
With the two weeks of play added together, the Spartans are now in third place in the region, three strokes behind South Sevier. The teams take each tournament and just continue to add each week on the previous total to arrive at region placement. This week the five teams head to Moab with Grand the host school and Emery will be looking to reverse their fortune and re-capture second place in the region ahead of South Sevier.
