The Emery High Lady Spartan volleyball team continues to play hard, aggressive volleyball as they finished the preseason and started the region season last week. Emery started the week by traveling to Payson and losing a match to the Lions in five games. Emery finished the week by starting the region season against North Sevier and winning a match in five games. Emery has played a lot of five-game matches lately it seems.
Emery lost at Payson 3-2. Emery won the first game 25-22 and the third game 26-24 but could not get the job done in the other three games. Those scores were 25-17, 25-20 and 15-12 in favor of the Lions.
At home against North Sevier, Emery lost the first game 25-16 and 25-21 as they were now in jeopardy of losing the first region game of the season. Emery took control of game three from the onset as they bolted to a 10-4 lead and never looked back. Emery won game three 25-14. Emery then took game four 25-22 and then closed out the Wolves in game five 15-13 to secure the victory.
Emery starts senior Sidnee Conder and five juniors. The juniors are Ashton Bell, Ashlynn Allred, Bailey Rasmussen, Emily Olsen and Cassidy Labrum. They are getting more and more comfortable playing with each other as a team. Junior Lexie Huntington and sophomore Bayler Griffin alternate in and are valued members of the team.
In game five, North Sevier scored the first two points of the set and then the third to lead 3-0. Emery got the serve back and with Labrum serving, Emery scored the next four points to lead 4-3. The score then went to 6-5 for the Wolves, 8-7 for the Wolves and then 9-9. North Sevier then scored four points to lead 13-9 and the Emery fans were nervous. Emery then scored and got the serve back and Emery, with Bell serving, scored the final points of the game to win 15-13. The fans were relieved.
Emery continues region play this week as they travel to South Sevier on Tuesday and then to San Juan on Thursday. Good luck Spartans.
