The Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition will sponsor its 15th annual community awareness program on Oct. 9, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Old Courthouse in Castle Dale. The program is free to the public and lunch will be provided. Door prizes will be given away throughout the program.
Our guest speaker this year is Donna Kelly. Kelly is a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Resource Prosecutor for the Utah Prosecution Council at the Attorney General’s Office. Kelly has prosecuted sex crimes, domestic violence and child abuse cases for more than 22 years. She began her prosecution career in Oregon and moved to Utah in 2003 to take the position of prosecutor at the Utah County Attorney’s Office.
In January 2012, Kelly hired on with her current position. Kelly conducts training for law enforcement and other groups around the state.
She is an expert in her field and draws from her vast experience to make her presentations relevant as well as informative.
Kelly resides in Provo. She is married and has five adult children. Kelly’s hobby is cooking. She currently writes two blogs on the subject and posts several new recipes each week. In addition to her blogs,
Kelly has written nine cookbooks. She said her most sought after is a book called “Quesadillas” which offers readers ideas on preparing hearty meals and desserts.
Kelly will talk about the effect trauma has on domestic violence victims and their ability to perceive and report events.
She says a victim’s behavior can seem bizarre and deceptive, but what you often see is the result of the trauma they have experienced.
Kelly will describe the symptoms of trauma and offer suggestions on how to be more effective when intervening with domestic violence victims. She will stay to answer questions after the program. Everyone welcome to attend. Call 381-4743 for more information.
