Vernal “Rex” Gray, 86 passed away October 9, 2013 at his home in South Jordan, Utah. He was born April 20, 1927 in Lehi, Utah to Hyrum Richard Gray and Charlotte Calloway Austin.
Rex worked on his parent’s farm until leaving on his LDS mission to Grand Island, Nebraska. On June 4, 1951, Rex married Nina Taft in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, they lived in Lehi the first 5 years of their marriage, then moved to Kearns, followed by a move to Ferron, Utah where they stayed for 24 years. Rex ran heavy equipment of all types and was an extremely safe, respected operator. Rex was a member of Operating Engineers Local 3 for over 50 years. He worked out of town for a week to a month at a time to support his family. Rex held many callings in the LDS church including serving in the bishopric. He spent hours studying his scriptures. Dad enjoyed time with his family. He loved all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survived by his wife, Nina; 6 children: Bruce (Ronda) Gray of West Jordan; Ruth Ann Hotchkiss of West Valley City; Jerry (Jana) Gray of West Jordan; Kenny (Marie) Gray of Clinton; Deanna (Steve) Gravley of Queen Creek, Arizona; Carolyn (Andrew) Pierce of West Jordan; 21 Grandchildren and 31 Great Grandchildren. Brother: Lynn Gray; Sister: Joyce Phillips. Preceded in death by his parents, 5 siblings and granddaughter Camille Gray.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the River, Second Ward Chapel, 1540 W. 10400 S., So. Jordan, UT. A viewing was held on Monday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. So. Jordan Pkwy. (10600 So.) and on Tuesday from 10 – 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment, American Fork City Cemetery.
