Cross Country first in region-fourth at State

The Emery High girls cross country team finished first at the just completed region 15 cross country meet hosted by San Juan High School. Emery edged North Sevier 37 to 45 with the low score winning. Grand was third with 64 points followed by San Juan with 88 points and South Sevier with 134 points. Erin Hurst finished in second place overall and led the Spartan team to the win. Taryn Parkins was close behind finishing in fourth place followed by Hannah Dyer in 8th place, Kelsie Cox in 10th place and Kassidee Oakeson in 12th place. Teammates Hannah Seely and Sarah Collard finished in the top 20.
All classifications in the state will converge on Sugarhouse Park for the championships. The region 15 boys concluded their race in the following positions: first was San Juan followed by Wasatch Academy, Grand, North Sevier, South Sevier and Emery. Wyatt Cox had the best finish for Emery followed by Jax Gardner, Brady Dale, Jaxon Bradley and Beau Ivie.
At the Utah State Cross-Country championships held at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City. Garrett Marsing of Carbon High School was the fastest boy to finish in the 3-A race with a time of 16:02.9. The Emery High girls team finished in fourth place, their best finish in a long time. Erin Hurst, a freshman at Canyon View Junior High, finished fifth overall in the race to spark the Spartans to their fourth place finish. Hurst’s time was 20:23, one minute and seven seconds slower than the winner, a runner from Rowland Hall. The other four Emery runners that counted in the total were within two minutes and fifty nine seconds of Hurst’s time.
Another Canyon View freshman finished second for Emery. Tarryn Parkins ran the race in 21:44 and finished 18th overall. San Rafael freshman Hannah Seely finished third for the Spartans and 31st overall. The last two spots that counted for the Spartans were held by Kelsie Cox and Hannah Dyer, both seniors at the school. Cox was 34th and Dyer finished 40th.
North Summit edged out Enterprise for the top spot by having the fastest individual runner out of the two schools as both schools scored 66 points. North Sevier, a region 15 companion school of Emery finished third with 92 points and Emery scored 104 points. Emery defeated North Sevier last week in the region meet.
