After winning the first game of the week in dramatic fashion, the wheels came off just a little for the Emery High Spartan basketball team as they lost twice at the 2A/3A Boys Preview tournament at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield on Friday and Saturday. Emery defeated Beaver in overtime Wednesday evening in Castle Dale in overtime by the score of 57-56. On the weekend Emery opened the two-day affair by losing to Parowan 54-50 as the team didn’t shoot the ball very well and then lost to Enterprise 76-57 as the team shot the ball even worse.
In a Friday morning game, Emery went 17 for 45 from the field, 38 percent, in narrowly losing the game. On Saturday morning,
Emery went 20 for 62, a 32 percent rate from the field. Over the two days, the Spartans made seven of 39 three point shot attempts.
Against Beaver, Emery led 17-13 after the first quarter and 37-24 at the half. Bailey Faimalo and Dillon Wilstead each scored six points in the quarter to pace the Emery team in that first period of play. Wilstead scored nine more in the second quarter while Faimalo scored seven points. Emery was outscored 14-5 in the third quarter as Emery had trouble getting off a good shot and then when they did, the ball wouldn’t go through the hoop. Wilstead had a three-pointer in the period while Gavin McDermott added a two-point basket. In the fourth quarter, Beaver again outscored Emery, this time by the score of 14-10 and regulation ended tied at 52-52. In the fourth quarter, Wilstead made three baskets while Faimalo added his only points of the second half at the end of the quarter to give Emery a three-point lead. Beaver’s leading scorer and best player then made an off-balance long three point shot to tie the game as time expired on the clock.
In overtime, Beaver scored the first two points but Emery quickly answered with a basket by Beau Roundy. After Beaver again went up by two, Wilstead was fouled and went to the line to shoot one and one. Beaver’s leading scorer then mouthed off to the official and got a technical foul, fouling him out of the game, or so everybody thought including him. Wilstead went to the line, missed the first of the one and one and then shot the two free throws for the technical foul and made both of them. It was then discovered that it really was a two-shot foul and Wilstead got one more free throw and made it to give Emery a one-point lead. Neither team scored again and Emery escaped with the win. Wilstead led the way with 29 points including going six for seven on three-point shots. Wilstead also added 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists and a blocked shot. Faimalo ended with 15 points, 5 steals, 9 assists and 2 rebounds. McDermott scored 6 points and led the team with 7 rebounds. Beau Roundy scored five points and Tyson Roper scored 2 points. Against Parowan, the two teams were tied at 9-9 after the first quarter of play only to see Parowan win both the second and third quarters to grab a lead they never gave up. Faimalo scored 17 points to lead the team with Wilstead scoring 9 points. Roundy, McDermott and Drexler Tanner each added 7 points. Tanner added 10 rebounds to lead the team. Roper scored 2 points and Tai Justice scored a point. Against Enterprise, Emery lead 18-17 after the first quarter but the game was then all Enterprise as the Wolves won the second period 28-12 and then coasted to the win by outscoring the Spartans in each of the second half periods. Wilstead led the way with 18 points followed by McKlane Allred with 14 points. Faimalo scored 9 points, Roper 7 points, Tanner 4 points, Roundy three points and McDermott 2 points. Tanner again led the team in rebounding, again with 10 rebounds. Emery will travel for two games this week, Tuesday at Union High in Roosevelt and Friday night at Manti.
Last week Emery girls avenged the loss in the 2-A state title game by traveling to Richfield and defeating the host team 54-43 on their home floor. Although it would have been nicer to have won the previous game, this win felt good against a high school team that has been competitive for many a season.
Emery also had another road game last week as the Lady Spartans traveled to 4-A’s Uintah High School in Vernal and won that game 54-49.
Junior guard Ashlynn Allred led the team in scoring in both games, scoring 21 points at Uintah and 16 points against Richfield. Allred also had 5 steals, 2 assists, 2 rebounds and a blocked shot against Uintah and added 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds against the Wildcats.
Senior guard Hannah Dyer scored 11 points against the Utes and 10 points against Richfield to finish in double figures for each game. Dyer had 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists against Uintah and 3 rebounds and 3 steals against Richfield.
Junior center Bailey Rasmussen had her best game of the season in helping the team defeat Richfield. Bailey scored 12 points and led the team with 7 rebounds while also coming up with 4 steals. Bailey had 4 points and 5 rebounds against Uintah.
Also scoring against Uintah were Ashton Bell with 5 points, Camry Johnson with 4 points, Patyn Jeffs with 3 points and Emily Olsen and Lexie Huntington with 2 points each. Also scoring against Richfield were Bell with 8 points, Johnson with 3 points, Kelcie Cox with 2 points and Jeffs, Huntington and Cassidy Labrum with a single point each.
Against Uintah, Emery led 12-10 after the first quarter and 23-18 at the half. Uintah won the third quarter 21-15 and the score after three periods was 39-38 for the Utes after the buzzer sounded. Emery won the final quarter 16-10 to get the win. Against Richfield, Emery led 17-14 after the first quarter and 24-23 at the half. In the third quarter, Emery went up 37-34 after winning the quarter 13-11. Emery won the final period 17-9 to grab the win. Emery has three home games this week as Manti comes to town on Tuesday, Beaver on Thursday and Delta on Friday.
