HeadlineGreen River basketball teams begin season

Both of the Green River High basketball teams are off and running in the 2013-14 season. Last week the Lady Pirates played three games and won two of those games. They defeated Tabiona at home on Saturday night 39-32; lost to Kanab 56-41 the night before and on Wednesday they defeated San Juan 46-42. The boys’ team played just a single game last week but they played it well as they defeated an outmatched Escalante team 103-49.
Against Escalante, Green River jumped all over their opponent in the first quarter as they went up 22-8 in that period. Green River never slowed down in the game as they won the second period 28-10 to be up at the half 50-18, won the third quarter 25-12 to now lead 75-30 and then won the final quarter 28-19 as the bench saw lots of action.
TJ Hughes led the way for the Pirates as he scored 19 points, had 10 assists, 6 steals and 6 rebounds as he was one of five Pirates to finish the game in double figure scoring.
Nick Corrigan scored 17 points and had 4 steals and 4 rebounds. Chance Pfander, Jon Mendez and Spencer Marshall each scored 15 points in the victory. Mendez added 11 rebounds while Marshall pulled down 9 rebounds. Chance also had 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds. Also scoring in the game were Colton Mecham with 7 points, Nathan Cox with 6 points, Jovani Flores with 5 points and Tyrell Shumway with 4 points.
The boys will be playing this Friday and Saturday in Richfield at the Sevier Valley Center against Milford and Wayne. Last Saturday when Green River hosted Tabiona, the Lady Pirates built a two-point first quarter lead into the seven-point victory as they stayed ahead of the visiting team. Junior Kira Engleman and senior Taylor Johnson powered the win as each scored 15 points in the game. Taylor also had 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals while Kira had 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Sydney Thayn, also a senior, scored 7 points and added 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Presley Lovato scored 2 points and Robin Nelson added a single point.
The night before against Kanab, the Lady Cowboys went up 12-5 in the first quarter, 25-18 at the half and 48-31 after three periods in claiming the win. Engleman scored 12 points in the loss and Johnson had 11 points. Savannah Williams, a freshman, also scored 12 points in the game. Also scoring were Lovato, Nelson and Thayn with 2 points each.
In the win against San Juan, Green River used a big final period to claim the win. The Lady Pirates were down 38-31 entering the final quarter but they outscored the Lady Broncos 15-4 to grab the win over the 2-A school.
Engleman, Thayn and Johnson each scored 12 points in the game to power the team to the victory. Nelson scored 3 points, Lovato scored 1 point and Williams and Cassidee Moore and Cassidy Bastian each scored 2 points in the game.
The Lady Pirates host Grand this Wednesday and then travel to Tabiona the following day as they continue preseason play.
