The Emery High Lady Spartans are now 4-2 for the season and had ran off four straight wins until the visiting Delta Rabbits, one of the better teams in the 3-A ranks, came to town and stole a win, a win that Emery could have kept if they had maybe shot the ball just a little bit better.
Delta, in a game that was a very good defensive effort by both teams, left town with a 37-34 win after the two teams were tied after the third quarter at 22 each. Emery earlier in the week had defeated Manti on the road 52-41 and then came home and defeated Beaver 39-31.
Although the team is winning most games, the coaches need to be just a little bit worried about the teams shooting percentages. Against Manti, the team shot just 38 percent from 2-point range after having shot 46 percent and 50 percent in the first two games of the week. From 3-point land, the team last week shot 20 percent, 12 percent and 14 percent. The coaches would probably like their team to be shooting in the high 30’s for a percentage.
The team is also not shooting free throws as well as they should. Against Manti they were 8 for 18 and 44 percent, against Beaver they were 9 for 13 and 69 percent. Against Delta they were 6 for 18, a 33 percent average.
The conclusion is that take any one category and raise to a normal level and they will win games against everybody rather easily. Although both teams played good defense in the Emery-Delta contest, Emery would have won the game just by shooting better free throws.
Emery led Manti 28-20 at the half and then extended the lead in the second half in getting the victory. Bailey Rasmussen was the leading scorer in the game with 13 points as the Emery center had her best game of the young season. Bailey also had 6 rebounds to lead the team.
Hannah Dyer was the only other Spartan to score in double figures as she scored 10 points. Hannah also had 3 steals. Ashlynn Allred scored 9 points and had 6 steals in the game.
Also scoring in the game were Camry Johnson with 5 points, Ashton Bell with 4 points, Cassidy Labrum, Emily Olsen and Paytn Jeffs with 3 points each and Lexie Huntington with 2 points. Bell and Jeffs each had 4 rebounds.
Against Beaver, Emery led 10-4 after the first period, extended the lead to 17-9 at the half and then each team scored 22 points in the second half. Allred was the leading scorer in this game with 15 points. Allred was 5 for 8 from the field and 5 for 5 at the free throw line in the game. Allred also had 4 assists and 5 steals in the game.
Rasmussen scored 6 points and pulled down 9 rebounds in tying for the lead in this category. Bell only scored 2 points but Ashton also pulled down 9 rebounds.
Also scoring were Dyer with 5 points, Kelsie Cox, Labrum and Johnson with 3 points each and Huntington with 2 points.
Against Delta, Allred led the team with 10 points and had 3 steals while Dyer had 7 points and also had 3 steals. Olsen had 5 points, Bell 4 points, Johnson 3 points, Labrum 2 points and Rasmussen, Cox and Jeffs each with a point. Rasmussen did have 9 rebounds.
The Lady Spartans are home twice this week, Tuesday night they host Millard and Thursday night they host Carbon.
