At the Huntington City Council meeting for January, 2014 the Mayor welcomed Laneea Cowley as the newest member of the council. Cowley won the election last November for the seat and joined Gloria Wilson, Mark Justice and Mayor Hilary Gordon in being sworn in as newly elected officials in the town.
Laneea Cowley said that it is nice to be here, that she is excited to be on the council and that she is excited to serve the people of Huntington. Each Councilperson welcomed her during their remarks.
The Mayor then handed out the assignments for the upcoming year. Jerry Livingston will be over the cemetery, the dumpster site and the fire department. Julie Jones will be over the parks and recreation, economic development and the Christmas season. Mark Justice will be over roads, the rodeo grounds and planning and zoning. Gloria Wilson will be over beautification, the Cert program and safety and Laneea Cowley will be over the youth city council, water and animals. Huntington held a public hearing to make adjustments to the budget. A member of the public asked why this was being done now and it was explained that the new Utah State Treasurer is making local entities change the way they do things and that now budget adjustments need to be done quarterly rather yearly. The adjustment amounted to around $14,000.
In a public hearing for the Huntington Municipal Building Authority, the city decreased the revenue and expenditures by approximately $50,000 for the year. Public input was accepted during the public hearings.
After leaving the public hearings and returning to the city council meeting, both of the resolutions passed that were discussed in the hearings.
The out of town water rates were increased by 50 cents per 1000 gallons for usage above the base rate. The Castle Valley Special Service District has changed their rates and the council Just passed on the increase.
The Council then set the yearly schedule for both them and the planning and zoning commission.
The Council will meet on the third Wednesday of each month while the Commission will meet on the first Tuesday of each month with the exception of July and November.
The Council then discussed the new grand stands at the city’s rodeo arena. After much discussion, the council voted to install the new stands where the current stands are located.
This is to be done to keep the race track available for use.
Although the race track has limited use, the Council thought it wise to not get rid of it at this point.
