Emery softball wins 4 in St. George

At last week’s 2A/3A Warm up in St. George, the Emery High softball team won four and lost just one in the two-day tourney in southern Utah. On Friday Emery defeated Summit Academy 12-0 and Logan 13-1. On Saturday Emery defeated Moapa Valley 13-3 and Weber 15-8 before losing their final contest of the tournament, a loss to Silverado High by the score of 16-7.
Against Summit Academy, Makayla Clark was the Spartan pitcher and limited Summit to no runs and only two hits in the game. Tayler Payne paced the Spartans with three RBI’s and had one of three Emery base hits. Emery scored a lot of runs because of walks and errors committed by Summit defense, 11 in all.
Against Logan, neither team scored in the first inning but Emery scored nine in the top of the second to really take control of the game. After Logan scored their only run in the bottom of the inning, Emery added four more runs in the top of the third and won the game by 12.
Payne was the pitcher for Emery in this game. Haylee Beckstead led the team offensively with three base hits and two RBI’s. Emery also had base hits in the game from Ashton Bell with two and Abby Jacobsen, Clark and Payne with one each.
Saturday morning, Ashton Bell pitched the team to the victory over Moapa Valley as she limited them to three runs and three base hits. Emery had 10 hits in the game to help them score their 13 runs. Clark led the effort with the bat by having three hits including a double. Gentry Noyes and Bell each had two base hits in the game. One of Bell’s was a triple and one of Noyes was a double. Payne added a triple while Beckstead had a double and Kambrie Hinkins had the other hit in the game.
Emery then played Weber a run in every inning on their way to winning this game. Emery batters were feeling it at the plate as all nine batters had at least one base hit as the Spartans had 20 of them in this game. Beckstead was one of four batters to have three base hits in the game with hers including two doubles and a homerun. She had four RBI’s. Noyes also had three hits with one being a double and another being a homerun. Bell also had three hits with one being a homerun. Amber Petersen was the other Emery batter with three base hits.
Abby Jacobsen, Hinkins and Clark all had two base hits in the game with one of Clarks going for a double. Payne and Jadree Huntington each had a single in this game. Bell pitched this game also.
In the final game that Emery played, Silverado was too much for the Spartans and Emery for the first time in St. George had an error problem as they had seven of those in the game. Clark on the mound only allowed 10 base hits but with the errors Silverado scored 16 runs, too many for Emery to overcome.
Emery scored seven runs off a good pitcher and had five hits to go with them. Emery scored three runs in the first inning as Noyes and Bell got on base due to errors and Jacobsen walked and Beckstead followed with a double to score all three.
In the third inning Emery added two more runs. Clark led things off with a double and then Beckstead walked, Payne got hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Petersen and Hinkins each walked to force in two runs. Emery added their final two runs in the fourth inning. Noyes doubled to lead things off followed by a Bell single. With two out Beckstead had another double to close out Emery’s hits and scoring in the game. Emery will open region play this week with a Tuesday game at Grand High and a Friday game at North Sevier.
Emery High hosted the Carbon High Lady Dinos in the Dinos first action of the season last Tuesday and the Spartans were too good of host as the visiting team went home with an 18-7 win over the home team. Carbon had 21 base hits in the game as every batter had at least one and one, Lauren Rice had five.
The Dinos scored one run in the first inning as Katie Bassinger had a single, Rice had a single and Chandelle Nichols had another single to score Bassinger. Carbon added two more runs in the second inning with Alexis Wilson hitting a three-run double after Bassinger walked, Chene Bigelow doubled and Rice hit a single.
Carbon added two more in the top of the third inning to lead 6-0. In that inning, Taylor Passarella doubled followed by Kimberly Johnson getting on base and Bigelow singling to score the runs.
In the bottom of the third Emery scored four runs to narrow the gap to 6-4 and gave the Emery fans hope that things were finally going a little bit their way and that the game was finally a game.
Gentry Noyes led off the inning with a single followed by a single from Abby Jacobsen and a walk to Ashton Bell to load the bases. Makayla Clark then singled scoring two runs for the Spartans and it left two runners on base. After a pair of outs, Amber Petersen singled scoring the final runs of the inning. Emery’s enthusiasm was short lived however.
In the top of the fourth inning Carbon would put together five base hits, a hit batter and two Emery errors to score seven runs and now lead the game 13-4. Rice, Passarella, Paige Haeck and Rice again all had singles in the inning with Bassinger having a double. Wilson got hit by a pitch. Emery could not answer in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams would score three runs in the fifth inning. Carbon got theirs off of five hits and a walk. Nichols, Passarella, Bigelow, McKenna Sorenson and Rice each had a single with Bassinger receiving a base on balls.
In the bottom of the inning, Jacobsen singled followed by a pair of fielder’s choices by Bell and Clark and a double by Hailee Beckstead and a single by Taylor Payne for Emery’s three runs.
Carbon added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to end the game after six. Passarella singled and Johnson doubled and both scored in the inning for the final runs of the day. Rice had five base hits with Passarella having four and Bigelow had three to pace the team. Bassinger, Wilson and Sorenson each had three RBI’s. Bassinger, Wilson, Passarella, Johnson and Bigelow each had a double in the game. For Emery, Beckstead had two doubles for Emery’s only extra base hits and Jacobsen had a pair of singles. Noyes, Clark, Payne and Petersen had Emery singles. Sorenson was the winning pitcher for Carbon and Clark was the losing pitcher for Emery. Bell relieved in the final two innings.
