Last week the Emery High softball team split region contests as they hosted Grand High School on Tuesday and defeated the Red Devils 9-5 and then on Friday the Spartans traveled to Salina and played the North Sevier Wolves. The Wolves won 11-8. Ashton Bell pitched Emery to the win over Grand while Makayla Clark started for Emery in the North Sevier game and was relieved by Bell for the final two innings.
Grand scored a single run in each of the first two innings while the Spartans went scoreless until the third inning when Emery tied the score at 2-2. After holding Grand scoreless in the top of the fourth inning, Emery added a run to take their first lead of the day.
Grand scored twice in the fifth inning while the Spartans responded with a single one in the bottom of the inning and the score was tied at 4-4.
In the sixth inning, Grand went back on top by a run in the top of the inning and then Emery added five runs in the bottom of the inning to now lead at 9-5. Grand could not score in the top of the seventh and Emery had the win.
Taylor Payne led the team with two base hits as both teams had five base hits in the game. Gentry Noyes had three RBI’s in the game to lead the team in that category. Bell had seven strikeouts as the pitcher.
On Friday, the Wolves had 18 base hits in the game with eight of those going for extra bases. Emery had 13 hits with only a double by Bell going for extra bases.
North Sevier scored in every inning with the exception of the fourth while the Spartans kept pace up until the fifth inning. Emery scored their runs in the first four innings and then went scoreless over the final three innings as the game slipped away. North Sevier scored twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to secure the win. Emery will host Uintah in a non-region game this Wednesday afternoon and then will play at South Sevier Thursday.
