Last Saturday Carbon High hosted a qualifying track meet and seven schools showed up to participate. Three 4-A schools Orem, Provo and Uintah were the big schools there along with Carbon and Emery High and then a pair of smaller schools, Pinnacle Academy and Green River.
Emery junior Ashlynn Allred picked right up where she left off last spring as she won the 100 meters, the 200 meter and the 400 meters, all in state qualifying time. By scoring 30 points, she paced the girls’ team to a second place finish behind Orem High.
The fun story of the day though was the girls’ 4X400 relay team. I kept hearing that the distance runners on the team were going to put a relay team together and talking to Coach Kevin Reynolds afterwards, which is what they did.
Kassidee Oakeson, Aubree Rowley, Allyson Woolsey and Bayler Griffin competed quite well as they finished second behind the team from Orem. Emery was way back after the first two legs of the relay when Griffin took the baton handoff and took off in pursuit. Griffin gave it her all, I am not positive she knew how far 400 meters was before she actually started running. She did a good job of getting Emery back into the thick of things and then she handed the baton off to Woolsey.
Woolsey overtook Uintah and Carbon and Emery had quite a comeback although Orem was too far out ahead to be caught. One had to appreciate the willingness of the team members to go out and just do it. That race is what put the Emery girls into second ahead of Carbon.
Coach Todd Jeffs had this to say when asked about Ryan Cox, “I have tried for years to get him to come out for the track team and I was always unsuccessful but finally this year he is here and look at what he is doing.” Cox finished third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.65, sixth in the 200 meters, fourth in the javelin and was a member of the winning 4X100 relay team. It was nice having Cox on the team. Other members of that relay team were Matt Mecham, Beau Ivie and Cameron Allred.
Paytn Jeffs finished tied for first place in the high jump with a jump of 5 foot 1 inch and second in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet 7 inches. Laryssa Guymon finished third in the javelin, third in the shotput and third in the discus. Bayler Griffin was seventh in the 100 meters and fourth in the 200 meters.
Here are the other girl’s that placed in the meet, Erin Hurst was sixth in the 1600 meters and fifth in the 3200 meters, Allyson Woolsey was fourth in the 400, Chyanne Carter was sixth in the discus.
Here are the other scorers for the boys’ team; Matt Mecham was third in the 110 meter hurdles and third in the 300 meter hurdles and Beau Ivie was eighth in the long jump.
Emery’s lone home meet, the Darrell Gardner Invitational, will be held on Tuesday April 15 in the afternoon.
