The Emery High baseball team officially grabbed the second place region 15 seed in the upcoming 2-A state tournament by losing a coin flip with Grand High last Friday and will now travel to Beaver this Saturday rather than host three other teams in Castle Dale.
Coach Steven Gordon was bemoaning the coin flip before it happened “because I have never won” and true to form he still has not won.
Although Emery has the second-place seed they are still rated by the Salt Lake newspapers as the team to beat and they retain their number one ranking. After Emery comes Millard, Manti, Beaver and Gunnison.
Beaver won region 13 and will host the Spartans, South Summit and Rowland Hall from region 16. Currently Rowland Hall is a game ahead of South Summit in the region standings but the two teams still have game to play this week to determine final placement. They will finish fourth and fifth in region 16.
Emery started their championship run last year by traveling to Beaver and defeating the host team in the second of two games that day. This year will see the same format. Emery and Beaver will face one of the region 16 teams in the early games of the day and then the winners will play as will the losers.
As of press time, Emery’s game is scheduled for 11 am Saturday.
