Castle Dale: Richard John Herring, age 70 passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014 in Provo, Utah. He was born July 21, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to William “Jack” and Grace Holland Herring. He married Margaret E. Gagne on July 10, 1987 in Orangeville, Utah.
Richard grew up in Salt Lake and attended South High School graduating in 1961. He served his country in the Utah National Guard during the Vietnam era. Richard enjoyed being a volunteer fireman and served as Fire Chief for many years. Richard worked for Utah Power and Light as an electronic engineer. He retired in 2002. Following retirement he owned and operated Herring Enterprises, repairing and servicing fire extinguishers, keeping people safe.
He loved lighting up the sky with fireworks at the Emery High Football games and holiday celebrations. He volunteered as an EMT for Emery County and was the EMT for the Emery Spartans Football Team for over 20 years. Richard loved exploring and collecting rocks with his family. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in numerous capacities including doing extractions and indexing.
Richard is survived by his wife, Margaret of Castle Dale; mother, Grace Andersen of Salt Lake City, UT; children: Becky (Darrell) Price of Rock Springs, Wyo., Christal (Dalton) Horscroft of Kearns, Erica (Stephen) Brumfield of Atoka, Tenn, Richard Troy Herring of Clearfield, Ginger (Eric) Anderson of Clearfield, Nathan (Valerie) Wilsey of Provo, Camille (Bill) Roop of Clearfield, Loretta (Troy) Bernard of Price, Katherine Wilsey of West Valley City, and Jay Wilsey of San Diego, Calif; 23 grandchildren; and a brother, David (Elke) Herring of St. George.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Herring and step-father, Jay Ashley Andersen.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Castle Dale LDS Stake Center (35 East Main Street). A viewing was held on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, 3401 Highland Dr. (1495 East), Salt Lake City, UT. Services are in the care of Fausett Mortuary.
