Become a junior river runner at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum in Green River. The program kicked off the end of May and the museum encourages local children as well as visitors to the area to come in and participate.
The children will receive a list of questions to answer. As they tour around the museum they will find the answer to all of the questions and they will also go outside the museum to observe the Green River as it flows through Green River.
After the completion of all the questions and activities listed, the child will turn in their packet and receive a minature paddle that proclaims them an official junior river runner.
Several children participated on the first day of the event. This will become an ongoing program for the children at the museum.
Among the questions the children answered included, why do you think John Wesley Powell is such an important historical figure?
Where did Powell’s first expedition start and where did it end?
Where did Major Powell lose his arm, was it before or after he made his expeditions down the river?
Some of the questions led to an exploration of the boat room downstairs at the museum.
The children were asked to find out the names of the boats most used by Indians and trappers.
William Ashley and his trappers floated down the river 200 miles in one of these boats?
What kinds of boats are mostly used on the river today?
