The Emery County Commissioners race was decided in the primary election held on Tuesday.
Incumbent James Nelson received 385 votes to Keith Brady the challenger’s 426 votes. Brady the challenger defeated Nelson the incumbent in the primary.
Clerk/Auditor Brenda Tuttle said the voter turnout was low with 28.7 percent of the registered republicans casting ballots.
There were approximately 20 unaffiliated voters who affiliated with the republican party on primary election day so they could vote in the primary.
Any registered democrats could have changed their affiliation 30 days prior to the election so they could vote in the primary.
In Cleveland, Nelson received 26 votes to Brady 28; in Elmo, Nelson received 9 votes to Brady 27; in Green River, Nelson received 13 votes to 114 votes for Brady; in Emery, Nelson received 13 votes to Brady-33; in Ferron-south, Nelson received 56 votes and Brady 26; in Ferron north, Nelson received 42 and Brady-39; in Clawson, Nelson-16 and Brady-12; in Orangeville-Nelson-70 to Brady 33; in Castle Dale-west, Nelson-31 to Brady-16; in Castle Dale east, Nelson-33 to Brady 49; in Huntington-east, Nelson-34 to Brady-21 and in Huntington-west-Nelson-42-Brady-28.
With this win by Brady, in January, Emery County will have two new commissioners with Paul Cowley having won the other open spot on the commission at the Republican convention defeating incumbent Jeff Horrocks. They will join Commissioner Ethan Migliori on the commission in January.
