Neal Peacock will be the guest speaker at the July Lunch and Learn on July 16 at noon. The Lunch and Learn is sponsored by the Emery County Business Chamber. Peacock’s topic is “Accidental Leadership: The leadership lessons I learned from serving as mayor of Castle Dale for 12 years.” It will be held at the Fairgrounds Park Pavilion by the Recreation Center. The caterer is Big Mamas.
Neal Peacock, M.Ed. was raised in Emery County, where he attended public schools on the “wing and a prayer” plan. He then graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in Speech Communication Education and a minor in history and then from Utah State University with Masters of Education degree in Secondary Education. He has taught 31 years at Emery High School in Speech and Debate, Theatre, History, Government, and Sociology. He was an adjunct professor in History for the College of Eastern Utah for 20 years. He has served as the Student Leadership Advisor for Emery High for 30 years, as well as a football coach, golf coach, theatre director and light-turner-outer.
He has five children, six grandchildren and a wonderful wife who one day said, “You have taught leadership for many years, why don’t you put your money where your mouth is. No one will sign up to be the mayor of our town.” And that’s how Neal became the nearly-appointed Mayor of Castle Dale. He has served as mayor for 12 years as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the Utah League of Cities and Towns, the governing board of the Department of Environmental Quality’s Water Quality Division, the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Education and the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Families. He has been a finalist for the Utah Teacher of the Year, been named the Debate Teacher of the Year by the Utah High School Activities Association, and has received an Honorary Doctorate of Human Letters from the College of Eastern Utah. He is now using his unique style of speaking and teaching to help train others in the areas in which he has both randomly succeeded and dazzlingly failed.
