The Emery County school board met in their July meeting. The board approved two new employees for the school district. Tracy Addley was approved as a bus driver for a Castle Dale run. Trudy Cox was approved for a half-time resource teacher at Ferron Elementary.
The board accepted the resignation of Emery High counselor Dixie Fielder. She will be moving to Rangely, Colo.
There have been eight applications submitted for this position. Interviews will begin soon for this position.
The school board approved the appointment of Kirk Sitterud as the Emery County School District superintendent. This approval must take place in a board meeting each year.
The board approved the annual fee schedule for Emery schools with the addition of a $10 fee for the A+ credit recovery program. This fee will be refundable to the student if they complete the credit recovery program. This is an online program available to students who have failed a class or need credits to be able to graduate. Many times students enroll in the program and then don’t follow through. If the student doesn’t complete the program the school will keep the fee. Green River High School also uses this program.
The board approved the medical insurance plan for 2014. The district will be with EMI Health for the next three years and are moving to a high deductible plan.
There are meetings scheduled for district employees to introduce the plan to them on July 29 and Aug. 6. Everyone will be enrolled at these meetings. The program also comes with a health savings account to help with the higher deductible.
The board approved the negotiated items with the Emery Education Association and the Emery Classified Association. The step and lanes funding will stay in tact and there will be a 1.7 percent increase in the retirement rate. There will be a 1 percent cost of living increase and 93.3 percent of the medical expenses will continue to be paid along with 60 percent of the dental. Three extended days will be kept. One change will be to tie the extra-curricular salary schedule to the increases so these salaries will also be included.
There will be substitute teacher training on Aug. 5-6 in Castle Dale. There will be haz-mat training on Aug. 11 at the Emery High little theatre. Aug. 13-14 will be new teacher training at the district office. On Aug. 19 school will begin.
The superintendent has received letters of retirement from Stewart and Leona Behling at Ferron Elementary. Applications are being gathered to fill these positions.
On Aug. 9 there will be the state delegate assembly at the state school board office. One school board member must attend so they can vote. Either Laurel Johansen will attend or Marie Johnson.
The next school board meeting will be on Aug. 13.
