James Leon Nielson, age 71, died at his home in Sun City West, Ariz. on July 30th, after battling cancer for many years. Jim was born at the Huntington home of his parents, Robert Bodily Nielson and Anna Blackham Nielson on Dec. 11, 1942.
Jim attended school in Huntington, graduating in 1961 from North Emery High School. He attended USU Eastern, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in April 1962, serving until December 1969.
He then joined the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office; graduating from the police academy in May 1970. Jim retired as a Lieutenant in October 1995. After retirement, he volunteered in the Glendale community as well as serving local service missions. Jim earned his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice at Glendale Community College and earned additional credits from Northern Arizona University.
He was actively involved in adult leadership positions with the Boy Scouts of America for over 16 years, while raising his sons. Jim had a unique sense of humor, was always willing to help others, and had a generous heart. Predeceased by his mother, father, brother (Reid Brent Nielson) and sister Jean (Hampton) McArthur.
He is survived by wife, Patricia, children, Ashli, Matthew, Philip, and Andrew; sisters Eda Nielson, Marilyn (Joe) Wilcock, and brother Robert (Mary) Nielson. Interment was at National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix, Ariz.
