Mary Leora Childs Johansen, age 93, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2014. Leora was born Nov. 12, 1920 in Mud Creek, a coal camp near Scofield, Utah to Adelbert Lee and Annie Irene Axelsen Childs.
Until she was ten, the family lived and worked in coal camps in Carbon County. At that time she went to live with her grandparents, Adolph and Mamie Axelsen on their farm near Elmo, Utah. Later, her parents purchased that farm. She enjoyed the summers growing up as all her extended family would gather in the mountains to go fishing, enjoy Dutch oven dinners, climb and hike in the hills, pick wild fruit, and play ball.
Leora married Lloyd Vinton Johansen Dec. 23, 1940 in Price, Utah. They were sealed in the Manti Temple, Nov. 15, 1958. They were married for nearly sixty-eight years before his passing on December 1, 2008.
At an early age Leora learned the value of hard work and passed that as an inheritance to her children. Lloyd spent their early married life herding sheep and farming before working over forty years in the coal mines.
Leora loved reading, gardening, sewing, embroidery, painting, fishing, canning, and feeding people. She will be remembered for her kindheartedness and generosity. She was always willing to help others with whatever she had and often opened her home to others who needed a supportive place to stay. Most of all she loved her family and caring for and spending time with them. She was always so proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed keeping in touch with them and sharing in their accomplishments.
She lived with diabetes for nearly 55 years managing the disease to maintain her health so she could do all the things she wanted and needed to do.
She is survived by their five children, Merwin LaVell (Linda) Johansen, Grandview, Texas; Helen Lee (Tom) Longhurst, Florence, Mont.; Enid Cecille Wood, Price, Utah; Gary Lloyd (Kathy) Johansen, Pocatello, Idaho; Charley Adelbert (Annette) Johansen, Benson, Ariz. Also surviving are sisters, Ann Allred, Elmo, Utah and Darlene Acerson, Riverton, Utah and sisters-in-law Leah Neilan, St. George, Utah and Faye Johansen, Price, Utah.
