Korinda Stilson the mother of Alex Stilson, Garrett Stilson, and Parker Stilson represented her three boys preparing to do Eagle Scout Projects at the Orangeville City Cemetery. Korinda delivered to each Council member copies of the three design plans. Included with the design was a cost estimate for the construction of the three Eagle Scout Projects. After discussing the location of the monuments at the Orangeville City Cemetery and the history of early settlers in Orangeville, these three Eagle Scout Projects and funds were approved.
Hailey Johnson, a Girls State attendee reported to the council and thanked them for making it possible for her to attend Girls State at Weber State College. There she learned how city and county governments work. At the start of the week the group was divided into 12 cities named after governments in Utah. Each city was in competition with the other cities. The meetings started each morning at 8 a.m. and the students would then finish their last city meeting in the dorm area about 9:30-10 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday elections for city and county offices were held. They elected city and county officers such as mayor, auditor, two county delegates and county commissioners. In addition state delegates were elected to go to the State Convention. Friday was the State Convention where they voted for people that would be in the primary election for governor. The group was divided into Federalists and Nationalists. The Federalist Governor won the election. Johnson said she was elected to be a Sergeant at Arms.
Wednesday some Veterans came and presented a flag raising ceremony in the courtyard at Weber State College. Our group singing an emotional song, “I Am Proud to Be An American”, followed this.
Thursday night each city group sang home made songs about their experience at Girls State.
Saturday was the Girls State graduation and we all wore our prom dresses it was a lot of fun. Johnson said, “Thank you Orangeville City Council for this great experience.”
Contractor Paul Riddle offered a bid to do the stripping on Main Street, in front of the Fire Station, the City Office, the entire cross walks at his cost for materials or about $1,600.
The City Council decided they would need at least two or three bids from contractors rather than accept this single bid. Councilman Kent Wilson asked the council to consider modifying the city ordinance to deal with barking dogs. The ordinance only mentions nuisance animals, but does not define what can be done about barking dogs. In the summer many residents have their windows open at night and barking dogs can disturb sleep.
Mayor Roger Swenson reported the state engineer has not yet approved the permit to clean sand and debris from under the Orangeville bridge. The city would like to clean out from under and around the bridge to prevent flooding in Orangeville during the upcoming monsoon season. After the permit is approved it will still take five to six weeks before advertised bids can be returned and approved before the work can begin.
City Recorder Ruanne Leeflang indicated the old city Christmas tree should be replaced as the lights have quit working and a new tree could be ordered from some company like Modern Display. The ordering of a new tree was approved.
The Special Service District has started a project of widening the Mill Dam Road. This would allow more area to walk in.
As of July 1, Orangeville has used 312 acre feet of water. The Cottonwood Irrigation Company reported that Orangeville has used about half of their allocated water. The water supply however should be OK for the rest of the year.
The estimate to do the crack seal of the asphalt at the cemetery is estimated to be $4,500 to $5,000. Bids will be advertised later.
The roller mill strip in the asphalt down main and some other streets is in preparation for replacing city water lines.
