Huntington City hired Jim Gordon at the August City Council meeting to become the next fire department chief in the city. Councilman Jerry Livingston led the hiring committee that included fellow councilperson Gloria Wilson, current fire chief Pete Alger and former fireman Lon Arnold. Livingston is the current councilperson over the department and Wilson was the former councilperson in that position.
Current Fire Chief Pete Alger thanked the Council for three good years as chief and by saying that he was happy to be part of the hiring committee. Alger feels they hired the best person possible and the choice was made because of his leadership, his resume and his ability.
At the fire department meeting later that same week, the department accepted Gordon as the chief. Gordon will assume responsibility on Sept. 1.
In other business, the City accepted the bid by Emery Sanitation to be the city’s garbage hauler over a similar bid by City Sanitation. City Sanitation actually had a bid that was $249 a year less than their competition but the Council thought it wise to stay with the local company. The contract is a five year contract. Former Councilman Bob Mills commented that the city made the right choice while city resident Doug Wayman thought City Sanitation would have been a better choice.
The Council also accepted the bid of the Utah Local Government Trust for the city’s insurance coverage.
The Council reapproved the Huntington Industrial Park subdivision located at around 600 North and 400 East. This was originally approved in July 2008 but the property owners never recorded the paper work and the current property owners needed it done in order to sell Standard Labs their building.
Huntington City is moving ahead with the first official trail in the city. This walking trail will run from 400 East along Highway 10 and over to the ball complex. Emery County is installing a trail that will run from the end of this one into Huntington State Park on top of the dam. Huntington City’s should be complete this fall. UDOT has assisted in placement of the trail along the road. The contract should be awarded the middle of September.
