Emery City held their monthly council meeting on Sept. 10. In a previous meeting in a closed session it was discussed to terminate an employee. The council had asked the employee to resign but he/she refused. The council dismissed the employee on Aug. 27.
Emery City advertised for a clerk, recorder, treasurer position. They received six resumes for the position. The council will begin interviews soon.
The council passed resolution 2014-31, the property tax rate.
The city’s contract with City Sanitation Inc. has expired. The council voted to extend the contract through Nov. 30 to allow time for the city to put the contract out for bids. Doug Wayman, an employee for CSI addressed the council and said CSI is a great company to work for and pays a good wage to their employees. The council remarked how friendly the office personnel is when they call for customer service and how the driver is very accommodating if someone forgets to put out their trash can.
The Pioneer Day celebration went well and the city did not lose money. The city purchased $1,000 worth of fireworks for the event. An idea for next year would be to take a town picture to send to the sponsors. Councilwoman Corinne Dalton said she had been to the state fair and got some ideas for games next year.
Mayor Christiansen had contacted the state to request monies for the rest area. The state said Emery would receive no money for the facility. The city will continue to take care of the rest area.
There was a meeting on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the old courthouse in Castle Dale concerning grazers on the Manti LaSal Mountains.
The old Co-Op building in Castle Dale was torn down and a new building will be constructed for joint use. The building, sewer drainage and curb and gutter projects are on track for the year. The secondary water will be turned off around Oct. 15. The open burn period is Sept. 15-Nov. 15. A permit is required.
Councilwoman Corinne Dalton reported the general plan is almost complete.
Councilman Varian Allen reported the flower boxes look good. The weeds will have to be sprayed soon. The town will advertise for a person with a commercial herbicide license for a 30 day position.
Councilman Wiley Pope reported the LEPC meeting was on Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. The town CERT team is dwindling. Mayor Christiansen suggested going to local groups and enlisting volunteers.
The closed sessions need to be kept private. Mayor Christiansen contacted the town attorney to make sure the city followed the proper procedures to dismiss a town employee.
