The Emery High football team concluded their 2014 home schedule last Friday night with a game against Grantsville. Emery went down to defeat in the region contest by the score of 42-19. After going to halftime trailing only by two points at 14-12, Emery was not able to keep up with the Cowboys in the third quarter as Grantsville scored 28 unanswered points in the period. Emery had two passes intercepted in the period with both being returned for touchdowns.
Emery scored once in the first quarter, once in the second quarter and one final time in the fourth quarter for their 19 points. Besides the two picks in the third, Emery also fumbled the ball away another time to help the Cowboys, which was too much to overcome.
Emery’s first touchdown came in their second series of the game with Tyler Olsen scoring from five yards out capping a 68-yard drive. Emery started at their 32-yard line and picked up 11 yards on the first play on a nice run by Ashton Dieli. Emery used 13 plays to march into the end zone with a run by fullback Matt Mecham being the longest run at 13 yards.
Emery put together a 65-yard drive in the second quarter to keep the score close at 14-12. Emery scored on the longest play of the drive, a 21-yard pass play from Zachary Jorgensen to TJ Lacock. There were nine plays in this scoring drive.
Emery’s final score came in the final period. Cameron Petersen scored on a 26-yard run and Lacock kicked the extra point to get to Emery’s final point total. This score came at the conclusion of another 68-yard drive.
Emery gained 201 yards on the three scoring drives and 52 yards on the other nine drives of the game. Mecham led the way offensively with 75 yards gained on 15 carries. Dieli gained 64 yards in the game on 14 carries. Petersen picked up 31 yards on nine carries while Olsen gained 14 yards on seven carries before injuring his wrist. Bryce Dugmore gained nine yards on a single carry. Jorgensen completed four of 18 passes for 44 yards.
Defensively Emery took the ball away four times in the game. Olsen, Dieli and Andrew Gilson each coming away with a fumble recovery, while Logan Cox intercepted a Cowboy pass. Gilson actually was making a tackle when he stripped the ball out of the hands of the back and gained a few yards before he was tackled.
Dugmore led Emery in tackles with eight while Ty Mecham had seven. Matt Mecham and Evan Swenson each had six tackles while Kolton Butler and TJ Lacock each came away with five.
Emery travels this week to Salt Lake City to face the defending 3-A state champion and currently ranked number one team in the division Judge Memorial this Thursday night.
