The Green River Pirate baseball team will participate in this year’s 1-A Utah State baseball tournament that starts today in Spanish Fork and concludes on Friday and Saturday in St. George with games at Dixie State College.
The Pirates finished second in region 17 behind Tabiona and will face the second place team out of region 18, Tintic, which went 13-2 after starting the season by losing their first five games. This game is scheduled to start at noon. The winner will advance to the noon game on Friday against the winner of the number one ranked team from region 20, Wayne High School, and the third place team out of region 18, Wendover.
The Pirates are coached by Tom Hughes. Hughes is hoping that his team has peaked at the right time and that the aggressive schedule the team has played this season will assist them as the state tournament begins. Hughes scheduled many games against region 20 teams in hopes of helping his team play better since that region usually has the best teams in 1-A baseball.
TJ Hughes, the coaches son, is probably the best pitcher on the team and the player that will try and lead his team to success.
Good luck to the Pirates.
