GREEN RIVER-On Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, Teddy Cornelius Ekker, age 83, died of complications from an automobile accident that occurred on May 7, 2014.
Ted was the youngest of 12 children of Cornelius and Edna Gibbons Ekker. He was born Sept. 27, 1931 in Fruita, Colo., but spent the majority of his life in Hanksville and Green River, Utah. He served his country with distinction during the Korean War.
Ted was a respected member of the community who loved his family and loved exploring the desert of Southeastern Utah. His business activities included cattle ranching, uranium mining and construction.
He is survived by his sisters, Gladys May and Julia Cheskaty; his wife of 59 years, Iona; children, Neal (Martha), Tamara, Gilbert (Emily), and Leslie; grandchildren, Matthew (Elijah), Brianna, Katelyn, Thompson, Madison and Jillian; and great-grandchildren, Teddy and Remington. Ted also leaves behind many family members and friends who cherished his laugh, his singing, his knowledge of fishing, 4-wheeling, gold mining, geology, cattle ranching, and the history of the Ekker family and of Southeastern Utah. Ted will be deeply missed.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, 11 a.m., at the Green River LDS Ward. Family will receive friends at the church Saturday one hour prior to services. Interment, Elgin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the John Wesley Powell River History Museum in Green River, Utah.
